On January 27 and 28, 2026, the University Center for Simulation in Medical Education (CUSIM) hosted the ESICM Intensive Care Fundamentals (ICF) course – a reference educational program for the training of fundamental skills in intensive care. The course was organized by Valeriu Ghereg Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation No. 1, in partnership with the Society of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation of the Republic of Moldova (SARRM) and with the support of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM).
The activity was attended by 17 resident doctors from the Anesthesia and Intensive Care (AIC) specialty, in their 2nd and 3rd year of training at Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
The teaching activity was delivered by a team of four ESICM certified trainers, coordinated by University Professor Serghei Sandru, who ensured a high standard of training and a modern, competency-based approach. Through interactive methods and applied scenarios, the course facilitated the consolidation of clinical decisions and management algorithms for frequent and critical situations in the AIC. Thus, during the two days, the resident doctors practiced current conduct for the management of a critical patient, including acute respiratory failure, shock, sepsis, as well as contemporary approaches to analgesia, sedation and delirium management. The practical component, carried out in the simulation environment, supported the integration of theoretical knowledge into rapid, safe and patient-oriented clinical decisions.

Marcel Abras, Vice-Rector for Clinical Activity, also present at the course completion ceremony, addressed a message of appreciation to the resident doctors, emphasizing the importance of continuous training in intensive care to increase the quality and safety of medical care, and thanked the team of trainers for their professionalism and essential contribution to the organization of this event.
"The organization of this course confirms the value of the long-standing collaboration between Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, SARRM and ESICM, which creates real opportunities to align medical training in the Republic of Moldova with European standards and to strengthen the culture of patient safety in intensive care. The high level of participation and interest expressed by resident doctors reflects their motivation for professional development and encourages us to continue our efforts to make ICF a constant course and, in the medium term, systematically integrated into the training course of all AIC resident doctors in the Republic of Moldova", said Prof. Serghei Sandru, head of Valeriu Ghereg Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation No. 1.
ICF is a structured educational platform dedicated to training early-career physicians in the AIC field, with a focus on the essential knowledge and clinical skills necessary to safely perform work in an intensive care unit.
